The Pritzker Architecture Prize is an annual award given to a living architect or architects whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision, and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture. The prize was established in 1979 by Jay A. Pritzker and his wife, Cindy. It is funded by the Pritzker family and sponsored by the Hyatt Foundation.

Sir David Chipperfield has been awarded with the 2023 Pritzker Prize.
Sir David Chipperfield CBE, RA, RDI is a British architect who is renowned for his design of iconic cultural and civic buildings and his restoration of historic structures. He was born on 18 December 1953 in London, and grew up in rural Buckinghamshire. His father was a civil engineer and his mother an art historian.
Chipperfield attended the Eton College in Berkshire and then studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. After graduating in 1977, he started working in the office of Douglas Stephen and Partners in London and then at the Richard Rogers Partnership. In 1985, he established his own practice, David Chipperfield Architects.
Chipperfield is renowned for his commitment to modernism which combines a respect for existing architecture with a contemporary approach. He has designed many notable buildings including the River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames, the Neues Museum in Berlin, and the Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach, Germany. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the RIBA Stirling Prize for the Museum of Modern Literature in 2009.
He has also built a successful portfolio of international projects, including the V&A Museum in Dundee, Scotland, the Shanghai West Bund Museum in China, and the Victoria & Albert Museum of Art in London. Chipperfield has also worked on restoration projects including the Neues Museum in Berlin and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
In 2011, Chipperfield was awarded a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2006 and a Royal Designer for Industry in 2011. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a member of the American Institute of Architects.
Sir David Chipperfield Contributions as an Educationist
Sir David Chipperfield has made many contributions to the field of architecture through teaching. He has held numerous teaching posts since the early 1980s, including positions at the Architectural Association, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Tokyo, and the University of Cambridge. He has also been a visiting professor at a number of universities including Harvard University, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Royal College of Art in London.
In 2009, Chipperfield founded the David Chipperfield Foundation, which promotes collaboration between practitioners, academics, and students. The foundation also provides grants and awards to further research in the field of architecture.
In addition, Chipperfield has written and edited numerous books on architecture, including ‘Architectural Design’, ‘Building the Future: New Directions in British Architecture’ and ‘The Architecture of David Chipperfield’. He is also a regular contributor to architectural journals and magazines.
